Throughout the novel, many connections can be made to human geography concepts:
Memoirs of a Geisha takes place in two cities. The city of Kyoto, Japan is a core area. This means that are higher levels of education, higher salaries and more technology. Also Kyoto, Japan is an area with the most centrality and accessibility, and is also the capital city. The fiction town of Yoroido can most likely be seen as a periphery area; meaning that that area has low levels of education, lower salaries and less technology. These areas generate less wealth than core processes in the world economy. I think Yorodio is a periphery region because as a girl, Chiryo’s father fishes for little money and this town is obviously not connected to the globalized economy.
The language of Japan spoken the novel is Japanese and words like danna and yokozuna. One thing that really stood out for me was the culture of the time period. I was impressed by Arthur Golden’s deep knowledge and translation of Japanese culture incorporated in the text. A Geisha in Japan is seen as a culture trait and other aspects of Japanese culture for example sumo wrestlers make up the culture complex of Japan. In the novel the religion of animism is practiced by Chiryo and the owner of the Okiya, mother.
